Wine of the Week: Lake Sonoma Zinfandel

It was a California Zinfandel that first turned me onto red wine. Dancing Bull to be exact. And I’ve been drinking Zins ever since – you never forget your first love! I was lucky enough to get to visit Napa and Sonoma in 2017 and had the opportunity to drink some great Zinfandels right from the source. Zinfandel is grown primarily in California, but does have an Italian cousin in Puglia where a smaller amount of Primitivo is grown. What I love about Zinfandel is the bursting fruit flavours that are typically followed by spice and smokiness. Because tannins are at a moderate level and alcohol is high, you get a smooth bold wine that’s easy to drink. This makes it perfect for those starting off on their red wine journey.

Lake Sonoma Winery Zinfandel

The Lake Sonoma Zinfandel comes from one of the best Zinfandel growing regions in California, Dry Creek Valley in Sonoma. And it has all the wonderful characteristics that I love about Zinfandel. The Lake Sonoma Zinfandel has rich fruit flavours of blackcurrant, dates, figs and black cherry followed by some cinnamon and chocolate and finished with a cedar smokiness. Delicious! There’s a medium level of tannin and acidity which helps to balance out all the big flavours. Great for drinking on it’s own on a cold November night, or paired with beef is great too. I had this wine with Korean short ribs which made for a very yummy meal!. The Lake Sonoma Zinfandel is usually $26.95 at the LCBO, but is $5 off right now. If you’ve never tried Zinfandel before, or you’re a long time lover, this the Lake Sonoma Zinfandel is a great wine pick!
